This ancient yew tree is celebrated as the oldest in Wales and one of the most ancient worldwide. Nestled in the churchyard of St. Digian’s in Llangernyw, this astonishing tree is thought to have graced the earth for an astounding 3500 to 4000 years. Its roots trace back to the Bronze Age, suggesting that this site likely served as a sacred space for pagan worship long before the 13th-century church was erected alongside it. 

Despite embodying the concept of mortality while paradoxically thriving, the yew has evolved into a symbol of eternity and is sometimes linked with the Tree of Life—a prominent motif in various religious beliefs and philosophical systems. In 2022, the Llangernyw yew was among the 70 ancient trees consecrated to commemorate the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth, and it is prominently featured in the book “The Queen’s Green Canopy.”
